The Sousa Chinensis in Taiwan has been listed as the Critically Endangered(CR) species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Present records have shown that the haunts of Sousa chinensis are overlapping with many economic and industrial developing areas in the west coast of Taiwan. Furthermore, there are a series of significant developments in succession in the future. Under the circumstance of urgent demanding of Sousa chinensis protection, how to make coast developments and maintain ecological balance as well is the important issue that we have to deal with today. In recent years, there are many new methods for ecological protection and resources remaining that deserve to be taken into considerations while we are making plans and designs for future developments. Though there have been accumulated foreign experiences that we can learn and adopt from, due to the cultural, social, and economic background differences, the applications of foreign methods should be adjusted in order to fit the local condition. This study adopted the research method of documentary analysis for gathering the background information and data of Sousa chinensis, and referred to the ecological protections utilized in China and New Zealand to identify and analyze the insufficiency of the Sousa chinensis protection and current ecological protection regulations in Taiwan. Then, proposed the suggestions and research prospection on the protection of Sousa chinensis, expected to give proper attentions to both coast developments and ecological protections in order to achieve the purpose of protecting and remaining the biological diversity.
